How Do I Look? June 9, 2004 Friends, Matthew 23:25 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.
This question is asked often. Before we go to work, church, school, store or any other place that we would venture out from home, we want to know if the outside appearance is presentable. If the answer is no, then we may spend more time changing our look to something that gets a positive response. Do we look better than we are? If so, then we have hit the basic definition of a hypocrite. Look at the text above and see that the scribes and Pharisees wanted to present themselves as religious looking men. But what about inside? But inside, they did not resemble their picture at all. We all know that God looks past the external and into the heart. He uses that information to work with us. He is not concerned with how we look in a mirror or to others physically. He is very concerned on how we look internally. Are our hearts pure? Do we truly love our neighbor? Are we strong in faith and belief? The next time we ask how we look, let's ask from an internal point of view. And if we don't get the answer we were seeking, let's work to change that appearance.
